Forums to Focus on Chronic Pain Management and Opioid Addiction

Physical and mental health providers, addiction specialists, and those working in the human services, legal and justice fields are invited to attend one of two professional forums on chronic pain and opioid abuse, May 8 and May 9 in Medford.

The appropriate treatment of chronic pain is an evolving, and sometimes controversial, practice. These forums will present data about the use of opioids in Oregon, the community effects of opioid prescribing, current best practices for the treatment of chronic pain, and how medicine and community justice interface around prescription opioids use.

  • Review of Medicine: Pain Management,” 1 to 5 p.m., Thursday, May 8, Rogue Regional Medical Center’s Smullin Education Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford.

    Speakers include: Brandon Lynch, M.D., Oregon Health & Science University, Jim Shames, M.D., Jackson and Josephine County Health & Human Services, and a “hustlers panel” of recovering prescription opioid abusers. 

  • Review of Medicine: A Thoughtful Approach to Pain Management,” 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, May 9, Rogue Regional Medical Center’s Smullin Education Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford.

    A total of 10 experts will present, including: Todd Berran, Oregon’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program; Hon. Patricia Crain, Jackson County Circuit Court; Dwight Holton, Lines for Life and former U.S. Attorney for Oregon; Amit Shah, MD, CareOregon; and Jim Shames, MD, Jackson & Josephine County Health & Human Services.
